Jorma Pylkkänen, Chairman of the Board

Mr. Pylkkänen has over thirty years' experience in pharmaceutical and venture capital industries. Originally, he was a manager of market research in Orion Corporation and was responsible for strategic planning within Orion until 1980. Mr. Pylkkänen served as Managing Director of Remeda Pharmaceuticals, 1974 - 1987 (part of Orion group). He was appointed the first Managing Director of Technology, Center Teknia 1987. He established the venture capital company Teknia Invest and served as Managing Director of the organisation until 1996. Mr Pylkkänen was a founding member of Medikalla Ltd, which is the parent company of MedFiles Ltd (medical CRO), Oü MedFiles (Estonia) and Medipharmia Ltd (CMO). He was Managing Director of Medikalla until 2004.

Mr Pylkkänen has been on the boards of over twenty, mostly high-tech, companies. Mr. Pylkkänen is a member of the board of Simcere Europe Ltd, a subsidiary of a NYSE-listed Simcere Inc. He holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Helsinki.


 

Tomi Järvinen, Member of the Board

Dr Tomi Järvinen is the former professor in pharmaceutical drug development and the Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kuopio.

He has published over 100 original or review international publications, and he is a participant in 20 patents/patent applications. In addition to his academic career, Dr. Järvinen has vast experience in business start-ups. He has been a board member at Finncovery Ltd, Medikalla Ltd and Pedipharm Ltd. In 1992, Mr. Järvinen received a Ph D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Kuopio University. He worked, 1993 - 1994, as a Post-doctoral Research Associate in the School of Pharmacy, University of Kansas. Dr. Järvinen is currently the Director of Kuopio University Pharmacy, one of the biggest pharmacies in Finland with a staff of over 80 persons.

Pekka Karttunen, Member of the board

Dr. Pekka Karttunen has a background in the pharmaceutical industry. He served as Research Manager and as Product Development Manager at Remeda Pharmaceuticals (a division of Orion Group) between 1978 - 1987. Since then, he has been running his own pharmacy (1989 -). Dr. Karttunen was a member of the Pharmaceutical Education Committee of the European Union, 1995 - 1999, and was Chairman of The Centre for Continuing Pharmaceutical Education, 1995 - 1998.

He has been a board member of The Association of Finnish Pharmacies for the past 12 years, four years as a Vice President of that Association. Dr. Karttunen is and has been a member of several private companies, for example Medikalla Ltd. He holds a Ph D. in Pharmacology from Kuopio University from 1987.


 

Riitta Vartiainen, Member of the Board

Riitta Vartiainen has more than 20 years’ experience in working in the pharmaceutical industry. Her long career has included many different positions; between 1976 and 1979, she worked as Product Expert of Diagnostics at Tam Drug/Tamro Oy; thereafter, between 1979 and 1980, as part of her education at the Finnish Institute of Export, she was working at the Finnish Embassy (Copenhagen, Denmark) as a Commercial Attaché.

She joined Orion in 1980 as an Export Manager for Remeda Pharmaceuticals in Kuopio. During the years 1982 - 1988 she worked with Oy Alko Ab as a Product and Sales Manager, being responsible for biotechnology products, domestic sales and exports. In 1988, Riitta Vartiainen returned to Orion as a Marketing Manager of DNA diagnostics. In 1992, she was appointed as a Product Manager in charge of antimicrobials. Between 1995 and 2000, she worked as a Research Manager (US clinical trials) in the Levosimendan Project. >From 2000, Riitta Vartiainen worked as a Project Leader for Easyhaler projects, and from 2002, in projects of Specialty Products. From 2004 - 2006, she was in charge of Orion's Specialty Products business.

During 2006 - 2010, Riitta Vartiainen worked as Senior Vice President, Business Development and Support, (Global Business Development & Alliance Management, Business Intelligence, Medical Affairs, Project Management and Mergers & Acquisitions). She was also a Member of the Orion Executive Management Board between July 1, 2006 and December 31, 2010. She has a Master of Science (Biochemistry) degree from Helsinki University.
